PRINCETON — Two Mercer County residents were found dead Monday afternoon when their Beckley Road home burned.

A total of five fire departments were dispatched after Mercer County 911 received a call at approximately 1:30 p.m. that a home along Beckley Road was on fire. About 75 percent of the house was on fire when firefighters arrived, said Lt. Eric Rumley of the East River Volunteer Fire Department.

Capt. Mike Gills of the Mercer County Sheriff’s Department said the home’s residents, James Barton, 75, of Kegley and his wife Delores, no age given, were found at the scene. Gills had to leave immediately after being contacted and could not be reached for additional comment.

Investigators with the West Virginia State Fire Marshal’s Office were on the scene Monday, but referred questions concerning the investigation to Gills. Both the home and its garden were roped off with yellow police tape.

“Anybody with information pertinent to the case should call 800-233-FIRE,” said Assistant Fire Marshal Robbie Bailey.

The Princeton Fire Department, Green Valley-Glenwood Volunteer Fire Department, Bluestone Volunteer Fire Department and Matoaka Volunteer Fire Department were also dispatched to the scene.

Traffic was stopped on Beckley Road while fire fighters and investigators were working on the scene.
